Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has revealed his plans to retire as a teacher.

Peter Obi has disclosed his plans to retire as a teacher as an inspiration to society that education as about the most important ingredient needed for success in life.

Obi disclosed this on Friday while addressing final-year students of Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha, in celebration of the International Day of Education.

In his speech, Obi emphasized the transformative power of education, urging the students to see it as the foundation for their future success. “Education is the most important thing in your life. It is the greatest capital and tool you need to be successful. That you are here is proof that you’re already on the path to greatness,” he stated.

The former governor recounted a personal memory tied to the school, saying, “In 1970, I stood at this school’s gate to salute General Gowon during his visit. I sang for him alongside other children. Through education, I grew to the point where I sat with him at the same table, making decisions.”

Peter Obi expressed his desire to give back to his community with his decision to retire as a teacher after his political and business career. “I hope to retire to Onitsha someday and take up a teaching job to inspire children,” he said.

He also highlighted the school’s historical significance, noting its upcoming 100th anniversary, and commended the students for their academic dedication. “Some of you are future governors and presidents. You must take your education seriously,” Obi added.

His surprise visit left a lasting impression on the students, who were inspired by his personal journey and words of encouragement.
