Former Gombe Permanent Secretary Killed

Retired Gombe Permanent Secretary Atiku Mu’azu was abducted and killed by gunmen in Kano after his family paid a N10 million ransom, following his car’s recovery by a mechanic.

Unknown gunmen, believed to be kidnappers, have abducted and killed a retired Permanent Secretary from Gombe State, Atiku Mu’azu. The victim was enjoying his retirement in Kano when the tragic incident occurred.

Atiku Mu’azu, who was also the former Chairman of the Gombe State Board of Internal Revenue Service, was living in the Kabuga/Jan Bulo Estate along Gwarzo Road in Kano. He was abducted after receiving a phone call from his mechanic, informing him that his stolen car had been found. The mechanic asked him to meet at an undisclosed location to recover the vehicle.

Unfortunately, when Atiku arrived at the location, he was kidnapped by the abductors. A source explained, “Later, the abductors reached his family with a ransom demand of N20 million. But the family could only raise N10 million, which the abductors collected, only to later drop his dead body by the roadside in a different location. A suspect has been arrested, but the mechanic is on the run.”

The Kano State Police Command could not be reached for confirmation at the time of this report.

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, confirmed the tragic event on Saturday. He expressed his deep shock and sorrow over Atiku’s murder. In a condolence message signed by the Director-General of Press Affairs, Gombe Government House, the governor praised the quick response of the security agencies, which led to the arrest of a suspect involved in the crime. He called for a thorough investigation and justice in the matter.

The governor’s statement read, “On behalf of the government and people of Gombe State, Governor Inuwa Yahaya extends his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and associates of the deceased, as well as the people of Kalishen in Shongom Local Government Area, where he hailed from.”

Meanwhile, on Friday, the Kano State Police raised concerns over the possibility of terrorist attacks targeting public facilities in the state. SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the police spokesperson, urged the public to report any suspicious activities.

Kiyawa stated, “Kano State Police Command, in liaison with other security agencies, has received intelligence reports of suspected terrorists planning to launch attacks on public gatherings in strategic locations within Kano State. In response, we urge residents to exercise caution and avoid crowded places until further notice as a preventive measure.”

He assured residents that necessary security measures had been put in place, including the deployment of a team from the Explosive Ordinance Disposal, Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear units to strategic locations. The police also provided emergency contact numbers for reporting suspicious persons or activities.

Kiyawa concluded, “The Kano State Police Command remains committed to protecting lives and property and maintaining law and order in Kano State. We appreciate the support and cooperation of the good people of Kano State and urge everyone to remain vigilant.”
