Doctors In FCT Call Off Strike

Doctors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have ended their strike after the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), led by Minister Nyesom Wike, met key demands.

The President of the association, Dr. George Ebong, confirmed the decision in a statement, noting that the FCTA had addressed crucial issues, including the payment of six months’ salary arrears.

Dr. Ebong announced, “Our members have started receiving alerts for the six-month salary arrears. Minister Wike has also approved and ordered the immediate payment of the accoutrement allowance owed.”

Other measures taken by the FCTA include:
– Approving a two-year residency bonding program for medical residents.
– Recruiting doctors and allied health workers to address staff shortages.
– Paying outstanding arrears to locum doctors and other health workers.

The association directed its members to resume work on Saturday, January 25, 2025. While commending Minister Wike for his actions, Dr. Ebong urged the FCTA to address other unresolved demands to avoid future disruptions.

In his statement, Dr. Ebong expressed gratitude, saying, “On behalf of the association, I deeply appreciate the Honourable Minister for his prompt intervention. His timely actions have ended the warning strike and prevented a prolonged shutdown.”

He detailed the minister’s contributions, including approving the payment of Medical Residency Training Funds for 2024, accoutrement allowances, and measures to address manpower shortages.

Dr. Ebong also appealed to the minister to implement mechanisms that would prevent such issues from recurring. He urged the FCTA to consider other pending demands, such as upgrading healthcare facilities, paying hazard allowances, and converting post-part II doctors to consultant status.

He added, “We believe in the Honourable Minister’s capacity to transform the FCTA health sector into a model for others. We also look forward to his visit to our district hospitals soon.”

He concluded with the association’s assurance of continued support for the administration’s health sector agenda.
