Navigating Life With Spiritual Discernment

Navigating life with spiritual discernment as a Christian can sometimes feel challenging, especially with so many sources of knowledge and guidance available.

Whether it’s through your pastor, other ministers, books, television, radio, or wise individuals, it’s easy to feel confused about what to follow or how to live in a way that pleases God. The concern often revolves around ensuring that your actions align with God’s principles while avoiding sin.

The Bible reminds us of the importance of seeking wisdom and direction from God. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

Additionally, James 1:5 encourages believers to seek wisdom directly from God: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” These verses highlight the need for reliance on God’s guidance above all else when faced with confusion or conflicting teachings.

In many areas of life, Christians may face situations where they need to make the right decisions without offending God. For example, take the topic of wearing jewelry. Some teachings suggest that wearing jewelry is sinful and that anyone who does so will not make heaven, pointing to the story of the Israelites who used their gold to create an idol. This event is described in Exodus 32:1-4, where the Israelites gathered their gold to make a golden calf, saying, “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”

This incident led to God’s anger and punishment. Yet, some teachings argue that wearing jewelry is permissible if done modestly and without excess. The Bible even addresses the proper attitude toward adornment in 1 Timothy 2:9-10, which says, “I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.”

Yet another perspective advises complete avoidance of jewelry altogether to stay on the safe side and avoid the potential for sin. Such differing views can lead to confusion, leaving believers unsure about the right path.

This confusion often arises from a reliance on the teachings of pastors, prophets, evangelists, or others, without taking time for personal reflection and seeking God’s guidance.

Some Christians may even judge or distance themselves from others who do not share their perspective, forgetting the biblical principle that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces (Ephesians 6:12). This verse reminds us that our fight is against spiritual forces, not fellow human beings, and we should not let differences divide us.

True discernment comes from being filled with the Spirit of God, which enables one to act with wisdom and love, even when interacting with non-believers.

God has placed His Spirit within every believer, but the devil also seeks to influence and control the soul. The Bible speaks about this in 1 Peter 5:8, which says, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. “The extent to which we open our hearts to God and allow His Spirit to guide us determines how we handle life’s challenges.

This applies not only to the example of jewelry but to many other aspects of Christian living. Romans 8:14 states, “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” When the Spirit of God dwells fully in our hearts, we are better equipped to discern the right choices and live in harmony with others, without falling into sin.

In summary, the key is to rely on the Spirit of God to help you discern what is right. Sometimes, the things we believe to be sinful based on teachings may not actually offend God, as He works with individuals in unique ways. Romans 14:4 reminds us, “Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand.” The most important step is to let the Spirit of God lead you and guide your decisions. Spend time seeking God, allowing His Spirit to fill you, so you can make choices that align with His will. Remember, even God permits free will in certain areas of life, but staying connected to Him ensures you make decisions that honor Him.
