Nigerian activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has appeared at the Abuja Police Headquarters following an invitation over a viral police extortion video.

Omoyele Sowore, a prominent activist and former presidential candidate, appeared at the Nigerian Police Force Headquarters in Abuja on Monday morning.

Arriving at about 9:45 am, he was accompanied by his lawyer and several supporters to respond to a police summons.

The police invited Sowore for questioning after he shared a viral video exposing alleged extortion by officers on the access road to Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. The summons, dated January 23, 2025, was signed on behalf of a senior police official and outlined various allegations against him, including resisting public officers, disobedience to lawful orders, and cyberstalking. The letter advised Sowore to appear at a specific office within the Force Headquarters and permitted him to bring legal representation.

The video in question showed Sowore confronting police officers at a checkpoint on the airport road. The officers were accused of extorting money from drivers and causing unnecessary traffic. When Sowore’s car was stopped, an exchange ensued. In the video, Sowore is heard saying, “You are not supposed to be causing traffic on the airport road. We are not parking. Go and bring your Oga.” Despite his objections, the officers temporarily blocked his vehicle. Eventually, they allowed him to pass, but not before an officer reportedly insulted him, to which Sowore responded in kind.

The video of the altercation sparked widespread reactions, prompting authorities to summon Sowore for interrogation.

This development comes as Sowore faces another legal challenge. He is expected to appear in court on February 4, 2025, in a cybercrime case filed by a senator. The recent incident has reignited discussions about police accountability and the treatment of activists in Nigeria.
