Following the discovery of over ’30 graves’, a shrine, weapons, and military gear at Udoka Golden Point Hotel in Oba, Anambra State, the owner has claimed the alleged graves were actually fish ponds.

Controversy has erupted over the recent demolition of Udoka Golden Point Hotel and Suites, also known as La Cruise Hotel, in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Authorities accused the hotel of being a hub for kidnappers and other criminal activities, but the owner has strongly denied these allegations.

The demolition, which took place on Saturday, January 27, 2025, was carried out by operatives of the state’s security outfit. According to officials, intelligence reports and a tip-off from a whistleblower led to the raid. The government alleged that over 30 graves, a shrine, military camouflage, and weapons were discovered on the premises. A statement released by the state’s New Media account described the site as “a kidnappers’ den disguised as a hotel,” noting that the graves were located on the top floor of the building.

However, the hotel owner, Udoka, rejected the allegations. Speaking to journalists by phone, he claimed that the supposed graves were actually partitioned fish ponds installed by the original owner before he purchased the property. He explained, “The fish ponds were built on the top floor for easy access to fish, which were used for barbecue at the hotel bar. The hotel has never been involved in any criminal activity.”

Udoka further claimed that some individuals who were unhappy with his purchase of the property had been trying to create problems for him. He said, “I borrowed money to buy the hotel and haven’t even repaid the loan. If an investigation had been conducted, the truth would have come out. I only found out about the demolition after it was carried out.”

The hotel owner described himself as a legitimate businessman dealing in motor parts and real estate, insisting that his reputation in the community could be confirmed by local traders. He also stated that he had reported the incident to the police in Awka.

In response, the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, dismissed Udoka’s claims. He questioned the logic of having fish ponds and shrines in a hotel. “Even for health reasons, does it make sense to have fish ponds on the top floor of a hotel? Where are the fish if it’s truly a pond? And why is he hiding?” Mefor asked.

Addressing concerns that the demolition might discourage investors, Mefor said, “It’s better not to have kidnappers lurking everywhere in our state.”
