Atiku Ignores PDP North East Meeting

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held its North East zonal caucus meeting in Bauchi on Thursday, with key party leaders in attendance but with former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar noticeably absent. He also did not send a representative.

Though Atiku Abubakar was not present at the PDP North East meeting, party leaders from the region including the three governors aligned to the party from the region were present.

Among those present were Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas, and Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri. Also present were members of the PDP Reconciliation Committee, led by former National Secretary Olagunsoye Oyinlola, as well as Senators, House of Representatives members, State Assembly members, and other prominent party figures from the region.

Discussions focused on party reconciliation and strategies for the 2027 elections. Party leaders also deliberated on the upcoming PDP Zonal and National Conventions, emphasizing the need to resolve internal disputes and strengthen the PDP as the leading opposition party.

During the meeting, PDP’s Acting National Chairman, Umar Ilya Damagun, urged members to prioritize the party’s interests over personal ambitions. He reminded them that the party is greater than any single individual.

“Interest is paramount. We are all in politics for various reasons, but the most important thing is that you can only achieve your goals when your political vehicle is strong enough to take you to your destination.

“PDP is a Trojan horse – a tested and trusted party with experienced politicians who have seen it all. We have the capacity to weather any storm.

“Nobody is above the party. We will support and acknowledge our members, but if you go against the party’s interests, we will part ways with you,” he said.

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who also serves as the chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, stressed the importance of reconciliation within the party.

To promote unity and resolve disagreements, he suggested a rotation of party positions among states in the region.

“Positions in Gombe will be moved to Bauchi, those in Borno will be shifted to Yobe, and Adamawa’s positions will be reassigned to Taraba, and vice versa,” he proposed.

Meanwhile, Atiku is yet toe explain his absence at the PDP North East meeting.
