FG Makes Huge Donation To Family Of Late National Flag Designer, Akinkunmi
By Gideon Ayeni

The Federal Government has fulfilled its pledge to the family of the late Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of Nigeria’s National Flag, by donating ₦30 million nearly two years after his passing.
The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Issa-Onilu, presented the cheque on behalf of the government during a visit to Akinkunmi’s residence in Elebu, Ibadan, on Thursday. He was accompanied by the Oyo State NOA Director, Olukemi Afolayan.
Akinkunmi, who created the iconic green-white-green flag, died on August 29, 2023, at the age of 87. Following his death, President Bola Tinubu dispatched a delegation, led by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Malagi, to condole with the family on September 4, 2023. During the visit, the government promised a national burial and financial support to honor his contributions to the nation.
Speaking on the donation, Issa-Onilu emphasized that the ₦30 million was not a payment for Akinkunmi’s work but a token of appreciation to assist his family.
In response, one of the late hero’s sons, Akinwunmi Akinkunmi, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the financial support, acknowledging the government’s recognition of his father’s legacy.
Meanwhile, in another development, GWG.ng reports that Omanise Obaje-Adofu, Assistant Director of Card Management Services at the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), has reaffirmed that only the commission is authorized to issue valid National ID cards in Nigeria.
Speaking during an interview on NTA’s Good Morning Nigeria, the NIMC boss emphasized that efforts are ongoing to educate Nigerians about the dangers of obtaining counterfeit ID cards from unauthorized sources.
