The Nigeria Police Force has strongly refuted claims made by activist Omoyele Sowore, who alleged that the tenure of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun is illegal.

In a statement released on Thursday, January 30, 2025, the Nigeria Police Force described Sowore’s assertions as “baseless and misleading,” emphasizing that the IGP’s appointment is firmly rooted in law.

According to the statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, IGP Egbetokun’s appointment aligns with PART III, Section 7 (6) of the Police Act, 2020 (as amended), which explicitly states that the Inspector-General of Police shall hold office for a four-year term. Furthermore, his appointment was ratified by the Police Council and formally confirmed by the Presidency, stipulating his tenure from October 31, 2023, to October 31, 2027.

The statement also cited Section 8A of the executive bill amending the Police Act, which ensures that any appointed IGP remains in office for the duration specified in their appointment letter. This amendment, according to the police, aims to provide leadership stability, allowing for long-term policy implementation without fear of abrupt removal.

Dismissing Sowore’s claims as an attempt to undermine public confidence in the police force, the statement warned against spreading misinformation that could disrupt national security. The police urged Nigerians to disregard misleading narratives and instead focus on constructive engagements that support law enforcement efforts.

The Force reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and order, assuring the public that IGP Egbetokun’s leadership remains lawful and undisputed.
