PDP Romances Obasa Amid APC Drama
By Benjamin Abioye

Amid rising tensions within the Lagos APC, the PDP is considering welcoming Obasa, signaling a potential shift in the political landscape as the former Speaker faces the fallout from his impeachment.
The impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has stirred division within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state with an opening for the PDP to welcome him into its fold.
The move, which took place on January 13, 2025, was based on alleged misconduct and financial mismanagement. Since then, tensions have been rising within the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body in the APC in Lagos.
The rift became more evident when two GAC members, Senator Anthony Adefuye and Muraina Taiwo, openly criticized the impeachment process, calling it politically motivated and flawed. Adefuye described the lawmakers’ actions as illegal and disrespectful to leadership, while Taiwo expressed concerns over the split within the GAC. He stated in a WhatsApp message that the council would defer to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resolve the issue. In response, Musiliu Obanikoro, another senior leader in the APC, dismissed their objections as “childish and inconsequential,” urging others to avoid making hasty statements.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State House of Assembly has suggested that Obasa may return to the House before any further decisions are made. They hinted at the possibility of launching a formal investigation into the allegations against him.
As the crisis within the APC deepens, opposition parties in Lagos are showing an interest in welcoming Obasa should he choose to leave the party. The Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos, Benedict Tai, confirmed that the PDP would consider accepting the former Speaker, but emphasized the importance of thorough background checks. He stated, “If we accept him into the party, we will put checks and balances in place because no one can just come in and demand a position. The person must have spent years in the party. We need to be sure he isn’t coming to disrupt the party, as some have done in the past.”
Tai also expressed the PDP’s intent to capitalize on the APC’s internal conflict. He added, “If disunity is an obstacle to their party, then we hope it worsens for them. They are our main challenge. The current situation in Lagos is favourable for the PDP, provided we learn from our mistakes and take advantage of their shortcomings.”
Similarly, the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos has also stated its willingness to accept Obasa, should he choose to leave the APC ahead of the 2027 governorship election. The LP Chairman, Pastor Dayo Ekong, said that the party was open to welcoming anyone whose interests aligned with its vision. “If the impeached Speaker chooses to join the Labour Party, he will be welcomed because our party is open to everyone,” Ekong said.
When asked whether Obasa might receive special treatment due to his political status and rumored governorship ambitions, Ekong clarified, “There are no automatic rights anywhere. People were at the party before he came in. What we will do is allow everyone to go through the primaries and test their popularity. It’s not about granting an automatic ticket to anyone. Don’t forget that the 2023 LP governorship candidate is still in the party. But when we get to that bridge, we will cross it.”
