A man was shot dead by suspected cultists near a popular lounge in Ibadan’s Bodija area, with police confirming it as a cult-related killing.
The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the killing of an unidentified man by suspected cultists in the early hours of Sunday.
According to the police, the incident took place near a well-known lounge in the Bodija area of Ibadan.
In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Adewale Osifeso, explained that the victim was reportedly chased before being shot dead.
Osifeso stated that an initial investigation suggested the killing was linked to cult activities.
He said, *“The Oyo State Police Command has commenced immediate inquiry into the Bodija murder incident that occurred during the early hours of Sunday.
“Preliminary Investigation revealed that a yet-to-be-identified man was chased and shot dead a few blocks away from the popular lounge located in Bodija, Ibadan.
“Preliminary Investigation revealed that the murder is cult-related.”*
To prevent further unrest, police officers were deployed to the area, and normalcy was restored.
Osifeso also addressed rumors spreading on social media, which claimed that the police had accidentally shot and killed a bystander, who was allegedly a student, while dispersing the crowd. He dismissed these reports as false.
He clarified, “Nobody was killed during or after the police dispersed onlookers from the crime scene.”
The case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department at Iyaganku for further investigation.
Meanwhile, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Ayodele Sonubi, has assigned a Deputy Commissioner of Police to lead the inquiry into the incident.
