There was celebration on Monday in the Lagos House, Marina after the powerful Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of the Lagos All Progressives Congress (APC) failed powerful pressures to reinstate Mudashiru Obasa as speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The move to get the GAC to reinstate Obasa was instigated by claims that his Lagos West Senatorial District, the most populated in the state had been left out in the power equation.

However, GWG.ng reports that the argument was poohpoohed after the about 20 members of the House from the Senatorial District backed out of the plan in support of the incumbent speaker Mojisola Meranda.

Lagos West spreading from Agege to Badagry including Amuwo Odofin constitutes about half of the 40 members of the State House of Assembly.

Monday’s meeting of the GAC began around noon under the chairmanship of Pa Tajudeen Olusi, leader of the GAC, the apex decision-making body of the APC in Lagos.

During the hours-long session, which saw widespread attendance from GAC members and Assembly lawmakers, there was overwhelming support for Meranda’s continued leadership despite opposition from those who wanted to reinstate Obasa.

That was despite the claims by supporters of Obasa that the emergence of Merenda from Lagos Central, the same senatorial constituency of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu distorted the state’s zoning permutation of sharing the first three offices on senatorial basis.

The argument to return the office of Speaker to Lagos West it was learnt was turned down when the members from the region turned down the office in preference for Merenda.

One source claimed that the meeting was preceded with optimism by the Obasa camp who appeared to have the support of some members of the Tinubu family and some powerful GAC members to reinstate him. However, that did not prove effective.

The decision to sustain Merenda as speaker it was gathered led to jubilation among her advocates.
