A 200-level student at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) in Kwara State has reportedly taken his own life due to financial difficulties.

The student, whose name has not been confirmed, was from the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences. He was said to have maintained a strong academic record, with a cumulative grade point average of 4.5 in the Department of Mass Communication.

The tragic Incident occurred at his private residence in the Oke-Odo area of Tanke, Ilorin. Sources within the university community revealed that he had been struggling with financial challenges for some time.

Reports indicate that the student lost his father a few years ago. Since then, his mother, a retired teacher, had been supporting his education. His financial struggles worsened when he resumed school last year. In response, some of his colleagues contributed money to help pay his tuition and buy food for him.

Despite these efforts, he reportedly consumed a poisonous substance last weekend after his roommate left for lectures. Before taking his life, he left a note explaining that he could no longer cope with his financial difficulties.

His roommate discovered the situation upon returning from lectures and raised the alarm.

A senior administrative officer in the school management, who sought anonymity on the development, confirmed the incident to journalists in Ilorin on Tuesday. He stated that the university community had been deeply affected by the tragedy, and both staff and students were mourning the loss.
