By Gideon Ayeni

Controversy was on Wednesday trailing the decision of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT), to confer recognition on Sunday Okey-Udeh as National Secretary with the camp of Senator Samuel Anyanwu threatening to jail the BoT chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara for contempt of Court.
The Senator Adolphus Wabara led Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Board of Trustees, BoT has requested the National Working Committee, NWC to recognise Mr Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the national secretary of the party but at the same time drawing threats of imprisonment against the BoT chairman.
The decision to confer legitimacy on Udeh-Okoye was reached at a meeting of the BoT at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja on Wednesday.
A major decision from the meeting was the official recognition of Hon. Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the PDP’s National Secretary. This move, the board claims, aligns with a judgment from the High Court of Enugu, which was later upheld by the Court of Appeal.
GWG.ng, however, reports that the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has ordered a stay of execution of the judgment. It was gathered that some elements in the camp of Senator Anyanwu have upon the basis of the stay of execution initiated plans to commit Senator Wabara to prison for violation of the court order.
A source speaking in confidence disclosed that Wabara by moving the PDP BoT to act against a court order was liable to prison for contempt.
The BoT at its meeting on Wednesday also directed the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to immediately swear in Udeh-Okoye in compliance with the court ruling, urging all party members and stakeholders to respect the legal verdict.
The board also commended the PDP Governors’ Forum, the NWC, and the South-East Executive Committee for their efforts in upholding the party’s constitution despite ongoing legal battles over the National Secretary position.
Additionally, the BoT approved the next National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, scheduled for March 13, 2025, viewing it as a crucial platform for discussions that will shape the party’s future direction.
During the meeting, a vote of confidence was passed on BoT Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, and Secretary, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, recognizing their roles in maintaining stability within the party.
The BoT further emphasized the need for unity among members, calling on all stakeholders to work together in repositioning the PDP as a formidable political force in the country.
