Why I Visited Babangida, Abdulsalami – Oluremi Tinubu
By Benjamin Abioye

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has explained the reason behind her visit to former military leaders, Generals Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar, at their residences in Minna.
She arrived in Minna on Tuesday morning and was received by the state governor and his wife. From the airport, she went straight to Babangida’s residence, where she had a 35-minute private discussion with him. After that, she proceeded to Abdulsalami Abubakar’s home for another closed-door meeting.
Speaking with journalists after the visits, Senator Tinubu described both former leaders as “fathers of the nation” and emphasized that they have been very supportive of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. She clarified that her visit was strictly personal and had no political motives.
“It is right for me to come here to greet them because they are fathers of the nation,” she said. “I, however, have to say that my visits to the former Nigerian leaders are private visits without any political undertone, because I had always tried to visit them but for exigencies of duties.”
She further appreciated the former leaders for their encouragement and support toward her husband’s government.
General Abdulsalami Abubakar also spoke to journalists after the meeting. He praised Senator Tinubu for her contributions to national development and described her as the country’s number one ambassador.
“She has done very well during her 1st and 2nd years. She has done a lot of things in order to bring Nigeria to greatness,” he said. “You have been carrying the governor’s wives along in all you have been doing, especially what you are doing for young children.”
The visits have sparked discussions, with many acknowledging the First Lady’s role in promoting unity and strengthening relationships with past leaders.
