IBM Joins List Of Global Firms Leaving Nigeria
By Benjamin Abioye

IBM, a leading American technology company, has decided to withdraw from Nigeria, Ghana, and several other African markets.
Instead of running its own operations, IBM will hand over its business in Nigeria and the affected region to MIBB, a subsidiary of the Midis Group.
This change, which will take effect on April 1, 2025, is part of a new business approach IBM is implementing in selected African countries. Under this plan, MIBB will take charge of IBM’s local operations, customer support, and partnerships while also handling the sale and promotion of IBM products and services in 36 African nations.
“MIBB will market and sell IBM products and services in 36 African countries, thereby giving MIBB’s sales network direct access to IBM products, services, and support, further boosting innovation and growth in the region,” IBM stated.
For many years, IBM has played a significant role in Africa’s technology sector, offering essential infrastructure for industries like banking, telecommunications, oil and gas, and government services. However, the company’s decision to leave aligns with a growing trend of international businesses pulling out of Nigeria.
In December 2024, Swiss cement manufacturer Holcim exited Nigeria by selling its 83% stake in Lafarge to a Chinese company. Likewise, South African supermarket chain Pick n Pay announced in October 2024 that it would leave Nigeria by selling its 51% stake in a joint venture.
IBM has yet to respond to inquiries regarding its decision to leave Nigeria and the other African countries.
