JUST IN: Reps Receive Proposals For 31 New States
By Benjamin Abioye

The House of Representatives has received proposals to create 31 new states in Nigeria, spanning the six geo-political zones of the country.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who is also the Chairman of the House Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, presented the proposals during a plenary session in the Green Chamber.
Kalu outlined the requirements that must be met for any state creation requests to be approved. He explained, “A request to the National Assembly for the purpose of creating a new state shall only be passed if a request supported by at least the third majority of members of the Senate and the House of Representatives and the House of Assembly in respect of the area, and the Local Government Council in respect of the area, is received by the National Assembly.”
The Committee reminded advocates for new local government areas that “Section 8 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, applies to this process.”
Among the proposed states are Okun, Okura, and Confluence from Kogi State; Benue Ala and Apa from Benue State; Amana from Adamawa State; Katagum from Bauchi State; Savannah from Borno State; and Muri from Taraba State.
Also suggested are New Kaduna and Gujarat from Kaduna State; Tiga and Ari from Kano; Kainji from Kebbi; Etiti, Orashi, Adada, Orlu, and Aba from the South East.
Further proposals include Ogoja from Cross River; Warri from Delta; Ori and Obolo from Rivers; Torumbe from Ondo; Ibadan from Oyo; Lagoon from Lagos, and Ogun; Ijebu from Ogun; and Oke Ogun/Ijesha from Oyo, Ogun, and Osun States.
Kalu emphasized the proper way to submit proposals: “Proposals shall be resubmitted in strict adherence to the stipulations. Submit three hard copies of the full proposal of the memoranda to the Secretariat of the Committee at Room H331, House of Representatives, White House, National Assembly Complex, and Abuja.”
Electronic copies should also be sent to the Committee’s official email address. The Committee is dedicated to “supporting the implementing efforts that align with the Constitutional provisions” and will only consider proposals that meet the required guidelines.
