Tinubu Sacks 2 VCs, Appoints Emodi, Tejuosho, Others Pro-Chancellors
By Gideon Ayeni

In a significant shake-up, President Bola Tinubu has announced leadership changes at several federal universities across Nigeria.
Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi has been relieved of her duties as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, which has now been renamed Yakubu Gowon University. Maikudi’s position has been taken over by Professor Lar Patricia Manko, who will serve as Acting Vice-Chancellor for a six-month term. However, Manko is ineligible to apply for the permanent position once the role becomes vacant.
Similarly, Professor Polycarp Emeka Chigbu has been removed from his post as Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), even before the completion of his tenure on February 14. Chigbu will be replaced by Professor Oguejiofu T. Ujam, who will also serve as Acting Vice-Chancellor for six months, with the same restriction on applying for the permanent position.
In a broader move to enhance university governance, President Tinubu also made key Pro-Chancellor appointments at various institutions across the country. Senator Lanre Tejuoso has been appointed as the new Pro-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, while Senator Joy Emordi will take over the role at the University of Agriculture, Makurdi.
Other notable Pro-Chancellor appointments include:
Engineer Olubunmi Kayode Ojo to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka
General Ike Nwachukwu reassigned to University of Uyo
Professor Zubairu Tajo Abdullahi to the Federal University of Lokoja
Senator Sani Stores appointed to Alvan Ikoku University of Education
Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi as Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka
These leadership changes are effective immediately, signaling a new direction in the governance of Nigeria’s higher education institutions.
