By Benjamin Abioye

A total of 10,000 young people from the nine states in the Niger Delta have started receiving ₦50,000 each in their bank accounts as part of an internship scheme.
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) confirmed that the placement of beneficiaries for the Youth Internship Scheme has been completed. The program offers one year of practical training in various organizations to help empower young people in the region.
With the selection process finalized and placements ongoing, the commission announced that monthly stipend payments have officially begun.
The NDDC stated that over 3.2 million youths applied, and the selection for the internship was done with transparency, diligence, and fairness to ensure only the most deserving candidates benefited.
Seledi Thompson-Wakama, the Director of Corporate Affairs, highlighted the overwhelming response, saying, “The Commission remains steadfast in ensuring this life-changing opportunity reaches the most deserving candidates, creating a lasting impact and paving the way for a brighter future.”
She further explained that the NDDC has built a digital database containing vital details about the qualifications, skills, interests, and employment status of youths in the region. This information will help in designing targeted programs to meet their needs.
To ensure transparency and ethical practices, the NDDC partnered with KPMG, a globally recognized consultancy firm, to improve its corporate governance framework. The Governance Advisory Report produced by KPMG will guide the commission in its transition from transaction-based operations to transformational development.
Thompson-Wakama also emphasized that the NDDC is committed to engaging stakeholders, youth, and community leaders to shape the future of the Niger Delta.
She acknowledged the patience and support of those who applied, stating, “We appreciate the Niger Delta stakeholders, including those who applied for the Youth Internship Scheme, for their patience, unwavering support, and understanding during the meticulous selection process for the transformative programme.”
She assured that transparency and fairness were at the core of the selection process, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
