Shehu Sani Warns Against Scrapping 6-3-3-4 Education System…
By Gideon Ayeni

Former senator and social commentator, Shehu Sani, has criticized the Federal Government’s decision to abolish the 6-3-3-4 education system, urging authorities to seek input from key stakeholders before implementing such a major policy change.
Taking to his X handle, Shehu Sani argued that scrapping the existing education system by fiat without consultations could have serious consequences for the nation’s education sector. He called for extensive discussions involving teachers’ unions, students’ unions, education experts, school administrators, parents’ associations, academics, and examination bodies.
“The Government should not just abolish the 6-3-3-4 education system by fiat without listening to enlightened views from teachers’ unions, students’ unions, education experts, school administrators, parents’ bodies, academics, and examination bodies. The National Assembly should hold a public debate on this first,” Sani wrote.
His statement comes amid ongoing debates over the Federal Government’s introduction of a new 12-year uninterrupted basic education model, which eliminates the division between junior and senior secondary school.
Many Nigerians have echoed Sani’s sentiments, questioning whether adequate research and consultations were conducted before the policy shift. Meanwhile, education stakeholders are expected to weigh in on the matter as discussions around the reform intensify.
