NCAA Takes Action Against Kenya Airways

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA is to sanction Kenya Airways over the reported maltreatment of a Nigerian female passenger simply identified as Ms Omisore who flew the airline’s Lagos-Nairobi-Paris-Manchester route.

GWG.ng had reported how an official of Kenya Airways had vowed to bar Omisore from flying on the airline after she complained of poor treatment meted to her during a long layover in Nairobi.

A video of the altercation showed the lady venting her frustration and threatening to call Nigeria’s minister of finance, to which the Kenya Airways official retorted that Omisore could as well call the Nigerian President.

The incident forced the NCAA to launch an investigation which revealed among others that on the first leg of her journey, she was not disruptive, nor was she rude on the Lagos-Nairobi flight. However, after the incident, the airline released a statement that misrepresented the facts, according to the NCAA findings.

The facts were then presented to the airline, but the misleading statement was not corrected. “We put the facts of the matter to the airline and rejected the misleading official statement put out by them,” a source said. Despite being given an opportunity to fix their mistake, the airline chose to stand by its inaccurate statement. “The determination was for the airline to update its initial statement to reflect the facts of the case. There has been no compliance. Rather, the original statement that obfuscated facts, in all of its royal misleading-ness, has been allowed to grow wings and fly,” the source added.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) had asked the airline to update their statement and offer an apology within 48 hours. However, the airline failed to meet this deadline and requested an additional hour, still without fulfilling the requirements. As a result, the NCAA decided to take further action. “The NCAA is, therefore, initiating stiff enforcement action against Kenya Airways. This action will go through due process. I have put our legal department on notice,” the source confirmed.

Earlier this week, a video posted by Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser to Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, showed Omisore venting her frustration. She expressed dissatisfaction with how she and other Nigerian passengers were treated by the airline staff. The incident, which involved a confrontation with a Kenya Airways employee, gained public attention and condemnation.

On Tuesday, the NCAA gave Kenya Airways 48 hours to apologize for the mistreatment Omisore experienced while traveling from Nigeria through Nairobi, Paris, and then to Manchester, a similar route she had used previously.
