Access Bank Reflects On Wigwe’s Legacy A Year After
By Benjamin Abioye

Access Bank has paid tribute to the late Herbert Wigwe, former CEO of Access Holdings, his wife Chizoba, and their son Chizzy, who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash in California one year ago, on February 9, 2024.
In a statement shared on social media, the bank honored their memory and reflected on the significant impact they had on both the bank and the broader community.
“Today marks one year since the world stood still for us. On this day, we lost Herbert, Doreen, and Chizi—three remarkable souls who left an indelible mark on our lives and our hearts,” the statement read.
“Although we still feel the void, we also carry the weight of their legacy—one that inspires us to be better, do better, and strive for greatness. As we reflect, we carry forward the values they instilled and honor their memories by following the path they paved for us. Forever in our hearts.”
The Wigwes were among six victims who died when their helicopter crashed near the Mojave Desert in California on February 9, 2024. The tragic incident sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s business and financial sectors, as Herbert Wigwe was known as one of the country’s most influential banking leaders.
A remembrance service for Herbert, Chizoba, and Chizi Wigwe is currently being held at Eko Hotel in Lagos, Nigeria.
