Delta: Omo-Agege Rings Alarm On Mass Defection Of PDP Lawmakers
By Benjamin Abioye

A major political realignment is set to unfold in Delta State as 10 lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are preparing to switch allegiance to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has said.
The defection plot as claimed by Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, erstwhile deputy president of the Senate, if true, could significantly alter the balance of power in Delta State’s political landscape.
Omo-Agege, the Delta State governorship candidate of the APC in 2023 spoke about the planned defections on Saturday while welcoming former Isoko South Local Government Chairman, Itiako Ikpokpo (also known as Malik), into the APC at a political gathering in Uro-Irri, Delta State.
Omo-Agege expressed confidence that the PDP’s dominance in Delta was weakening, stating that shifting loyalties were paving the way for APC to gain greater influence. He highlighted that the APC currently holds seven seats in the Delta State House of Assembly, but with the defection of 10 PDP lawmakers, the party would secure a majority of 17 members turning the APC into a majority in the House.
“This is a major political shift. The days of PDP’s stronghold in Delta are numbered,” Omo-Agege declared.
The former lawmaker attributed what he claimed as the growing popularity of APC in the state to economic policies under President Bola Tinubu, which he claimed had significantly increased Delta’s federal allocations to over ₦1 trillion within 18 months.
According to Omo-Agege, these financial improvements demonstrate APC’s commitment to delivering good governance, making it an attractive choice for politicians seeking a stronger political platform.
GWG.ng reports that Omo-Agege’s claims are, however, bound to be contested by other stakeholders aligned to the PDP who claim that the party that has ruled over the state since 1999 is an institution.
“Let’s see how they are going to force APC on our throats,” an associate of the governor said.
Meanwhile, describing Ikpokpo’s decision to leave PDP for APC as a game-changer, Omo-Agege revealed that he had personally urged the former local government chairman to switch parties.
“I have been convincing Ikpokpo to join APC, and today he has finally taken the bold step. His move signals that our party is on the right path to victory in Delta,” he said.
In response, Ikpokpo pledged to help strengthen APC’s presence at the grassroots level, emphasizing the need for unity ahead of the 2027 elections.
“We must embrace new members with open arms. A united APC is the key to removing PDP from power in 2027,” he stated.
The APC Isoko South Chairman, Vincent Egbogbo, also celebrated the defections, calling them a sign of bigger victories ahead.
“The APC is gearing up to take over Delta State in 2027. We must remain focused and strengthen our efforts to ensure PDP’s total defeat,” he urged party members.
With the increasing number of PDP members crossing over to APC, all eyes are now on the political future of Delta State, as both parties brace for a battle that could reshape the state’s leadership.
