UCH: Students Protest Power, Water Scarcity
Medical students of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, have taken to the institution’s Chief Medical Director’s (CMD) office to protest the prolonged power outage and water supply on campus.
The aggrieved students, who have endured over 100 days of power outage since October 2024, stormed the CMD’s office on Monday with placards bearing inscriptions such as “+100 Days of Darkness: Save UCH; Save ABH Hall; Save Falade Hall; Give Us Light; This Is Not How We Want To Live; Medical School Is Hard Enough—Give Us Light; All We Are Saying, Give Us Light.”
As the demonstration continued, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and the CMD, Prof. Jesse Otegbayo, were reportedly in a crucial meeting with stakeholders at the hospital’s conference room to find a solution to the persistent power crisis.
Meanwhile, GWG.ng reports that UCH had on Sunday, February 9, debunked viral Nigeria news reports claiming that patients were resorting to bringing their own generators to the hospital due to the power outage. The hospital management dismissed the claims, insisting that while UCH has been facing power supply challenges, no patients have been forced to bring personal generators for treatment.
Despite the denial, the ongoing student protest underline growing concerns over the impact of the power crisis on medical training and healthcare services at Nigeria’s premier teaching hospital— UCH Ibadan.
