By Benjamin Abioye

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has expressed confidence in securing a second term in the 2027 gubernatorial election, emphasizing his focus on lasting development over tenure extension.
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, expressed strong confidence in his chances of winning a second term in the 2027 gubernatorial election if he chooses to run.
During a solidarity visit on Tuesday from representatives of the three Local Government Areas that make up the Kalabari Ethnic Nationality, Fubara acknowledged the overwhelming support he has received for his leadership.
The delegation formally endorsed him for re-election, praising his governance style and dedication to infrastructure development, particularly the ongoing ₦200 billion Trans-Kalabari road project.
However, Fubara emphasized that his administration’s focus is more on creating a lasting impact in the state rather than seeking re-election. His goal remains to improve the state’s future rather than simply holding office longer.
Meanwhile, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, announced the appointment of Rep. Isiaka Ibrahim (APC, Ogun) as the new Deputy Chief Whip.
The announcement was made during Tuesday’s plenary in Abuja. Ibrahim replaced the late Adewunmi Onanuga, who passed away on January 15. Abbas explained that the appointment followed extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders, including the APC South-West caucus. Ibrahim, who represents Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency in Ogun, is expected to bring his experience and legislative skills to the new role.
In other political news, Hon. Amos Magaji, representing Zangon Kataf/Jaba Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Magaji cited ongoing internal crises within the PDP, from the national level down to the ward structure, as the reason for his decision. He made the announcement on the floor of the House, reading his defection letter.
Magaji is the Chairman of the House Committee on Health Care Services and has served as a two-time member of the House, where he also chaired the Kaduna caucus.
Additionally, he is the Deputy Chairman of the House Special Ad-hoc Committee on the Restructuring of Government Agencies and Commissions, which is reviewing the recommendations of the Stephen Oronsaye report.
