200% Tariff Hike: Doubts Trail MTN’s Apology

MTN Nigeria’s capitulation and apology over its unpopular 200% tariff hike is faced with serious doubts

GWG.ng reports that while some appreciate the apology, others remain doubtful, questioning MTN’s sincerity and transparency flowing from past experiences with the telecommunication giant.

Earlier this week, MTN had increased the price of its 15GB weekly data bundle from ₦2,000 to ₦6,000, sparking widespread outrage. The backlash prompted MTN to issue an apology on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, admitting that the increase was a mistake.

However, Nigerians are not convinced that MTN has fully restored the old prices. Many online users have demanded clarity, asking whether the 15GB bundle has officially returned to ₦2,000 or if the apology was merely a public relations move.

A user, @alexoflagos, directly questioned MTN’s announcement, asking, “You don return am to 2k or you never return am?” echoing the concerns of many who are yet to see the price rollback reflected in their accounts.

Similarly, @lifeinsolace criticized the company’s approach, saying, “You guys don’t always have to provoke us before doing the right thing. By the way, I didn’t see where you explicitly said you have revoked the increment. Saying ‘na mistake’ is not enough.”

Another user, @HarryAgada, made it clear that the apology by MTN would only be accepted if action followed, stating, “We can accept the apologies if the price goes back to 2k.”

Some users expressed frustration at what they see as a pattern of exploitation by corporations. @Moon💱Boi remarked, “They don see us finish for this country… they believe say we be mumu and keep demanding more from us.”

Similarly, @MOTM🏀💫⭐ warned, “This is a sign that we’re going to throw them comot for Naija very soon.”

Others, like @wendy_utd, dismissed the apology entirely, categorizing it as a weak attempt at damage control: “I have seen many apology letters, and this one is under the category of ‘Okay sorry.’”

Despite the skepticism, a few users responded more positively. @of_echoes28961 simply wrote, “@MTNNG, we love you too 💛💛💛.”

Some took the situation humorously. @TrybeCityJobs joked about how widespread digital bundles have become in Nigeria: “So lowkey everybody for country dey do digital bundle? What happened to ‘I would have bought a GLK if I wasn’t buying data’?”

Meanwhile, @Tetulatony took a more dramatic stance, exclaiming, “Heaven is far from you people.”

While MTN’s statement attempted to ease tensions, the company has yet to explicitly confirm whether the price has been restored to its previous rate. For many Nigerians, the apology alone is not enough—they demand clear action.
