UNIZIK Lecturer Slapped By Student Breaks Silence (Video)
By Benjamin Abioye

Dr Chukwudi Michael Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre and Film Studies at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), has broken his silence regarding the widely discussed altercation between him and a female student, Precious Mbakwe.
In his account, Dr Michael Okoye detailed how a simple request turned into a dramatic confrontation that left him physically assaulted.
Speaking in a recorded statement, the lecturer recounted the incident:
“My name is Dr. Chukwudi Micheal Okoye, a lecturer with the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, Faculty of Arts, Nnamdi Azikiwe University. Well, like I said, I wouldn’t want to go into the narration because it will take quite some time, but you know, like as the only modification I would just give for the essence of recording is, I was leaving a classroom to my office when I saw the lady along the passage, along the corridor of the Faculty of Arts.”
According to him, the female student was filming a TikTok video in the hallway, obstructing movement. He attempted to pass and politely asked for space.
“So she was making a TikTok video and I needed to pass because, you know, the way the place is and someone was by there, so I just tapped and said, ‘Excuse me,’ and walked off. And when she made that sort of comment, I had to come back to first ascertain if she was a student, if she was my student in the department.”
Realizing that she was recording a social media video in a university hallway, Dr. Micheal requested that she delete the footage.
“I noticed it was a TikTok video, so I needed her to delete it. I actually asked her to delete it right in front of me.”
However, the student refused to comply. In an attempt to prevent the unauthorized recording from circulating, the lecturer attempted to confiscate the phone.
“When she refused, I stretched my hand to confiscate the phone and now because I knew that would make her now say she’s from a different department because I had no knowledge of who she was. And that was when all hell let loose, and the rest, like they say, is history.”
Dr Michael Okoye, who appeared reluctant to go into further details, left the outcome of the case to the university authorities.
“So that’s all I can say for now. Any other actions, I leave that to the committee to sort out. Thank you very much. God bless you.”
How It All Started
The incident, which has since gone viral, began when the student, Precious Mbakwe, was reportedly recording a dance video along a busy university corridor. Dr. Micheal Okoye, who was passing by, inadvertently appeared in the recording. Upon realizing this, he requested that the video be deleted, but the student allegedly resisted. This led to a heated confrontation during which she reportedly assaulted him, scratching his face, tearing his clothes, and biting him on both arms.
Following the altercation, the university management launched an investigation, with both parties awaiting further action from the disciplinary committee. Meanwhile, the case has sparked widespread debate on social media, with opinions divided on student behavior, lecturers’ authority, and the influence of social media trends in academic spaces.
