The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has reacted to the viral video showing a female student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Precious Mbakwe, physically assaulting a lecturer after he interrupted her video recording.

The incident, which was viral on Nigeria news platforms, led the UNIZIK management to set up a disciplinary panel, resulting in the student’s expulsion, a decision that has now been commended by ASUU.

In a statement, ASUU commended the lecturer, Dr. Chukwudi Michael Okoye, for his maturity and professionalism in handling the situation. The union described his reaction as a testament to his character and a reflection of the values expected of academic staff.

Furthermore, ASUU praised the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Joseph Ahamefuna Ikechebelu, for taking swift and decisive action against the student, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to maintaining discipline and a conducive learning environment.

Part of the statement reads:

“The Academic Staff Union of Universities wishes to commend Dr. Chukwudi Michael Okoye for his exemplary display of maturity and civility in the face of the recent violent assault on him by a female student, Precious Mbakwe, of the Department of History and International Studies.”

ASUU reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights of its members while ensuring that universities uphold the highest standards of discipline and academic integrity.
