By Gideon Ayeni

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of the 2024 Second Series of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates.
Announcing the WAEC results on Sunday, the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosore Adesina, disclosed that a total of 68,342 candidates registered for the examination, reflecting a 20% decline compared to 2023. Of this number, 65,023 candidates sat for the exam across 5,067 centers nationwide.
Among the candidates were 157 individuals with special needs, including those with visual impairments, hearing impairments, and albinism.
Performance statistics revealed that 34,878 candidates (53.64%) secured credit passes in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. Additionally, 43,923 candidates (67.55%) obtained credit passes in at least five subjects, irrespective of English and Mathematics.
A breakdown of gender performance showed that 17,992 female candidates (51.58%) met the minimum benchmark, compared to 16,886 males (48.41%).
WAEC confirmed that 95.90% of candidates had their results fully processed and released, while 2,669 candidates (4.10%) had some subjects still being processed due to errors from their end.
However, the examination body withheld the results of 2,577 candidates (3.96%) over alleged involvement in examination malpractice. Affected candidates have been advised to lodge complaints via WAEC’s online portal, as their cases will be reviewed by the Council’s committee before final decisions are made.
The 2024 WAEC examination, conducted between October 25 and December 20, introduced a hybrid mode, allowing candidates to choose between traditional paper-based testing and a computer-based option during registration.
