The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a statement clarifying its involvement at the Lagos State House of Assembly, following growing concerns about the security situation at the Assembly complex.

According to the DSS, its operatives were deployed to the Lagos Assembly based on an official request from the lawmakers.

The security agency emphasized that it did not forcefully take control of the premises, contrary to some reports, but rather acted in response to a formal letter sent by the Assembly on February 14, 2025.

The letter, the DSS explained, raised concerns about potential attempts to reinstate the impeached Speaker of the Assembly on February 18, 2025, a move that lawmakers feared could trigger security threats and unrest. As a result, the lawmakers requested heightened security measures, including tighter access controls and an increased presence of security personnel beginning February 16, 2025.

In its response, the DSS assured the public that its presence at the Assembly was solely to preserve peace and ensure order during this sensitive period. The agency further stated that it was committed to upholding the safety of all parties involved, in alignment with the request from the Assembly.

This clarification comes amid speculations over the sealing of offices belonging to the Speaker and his Deputy, which had fueled concerns about the growing security presence at the Assembly.

The DSS reaffirmed that its actions were solely precautionary and aligned with the lawmakers’ request for additional security.
