Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has launched Grok-3, the latest version of its chatbot, as it aims to rival other major AI models.

The new chatbot enters the market at a critical time, shortly after China’s DeepSeek introduced its powerful open-source AI model. Grok-3 is positioned to challenge OpenAI, which is backed by Microsoft, and Google’s AI advancements.

To make Grok-3 accessible to users, xAI has immediately rolled it out to Premium+ subscribers on X, the social media platform owned by Musk. Additionally, the company has introduced a new subscription plan called SuperGrok, available through the chatbot’s mobile app and the Grok.com website.

During a livestream with xAI engineers, Musk praised the new model, saying, “Grok-3 across the board is in a league of its own.” He emphasized that this version performs significantly better than its predecessor, Grok-2.

Industry experts have mixed reactions to the new AI model. Gil Luria, managing director at D.A. Davidson, noted, “The introduction of Grok-3 puts xAI back in the race for leadership in open-source LLMs. It outperforms the current state-of-the-art models on some benchmarks, which makes xAI relevant again.” However, he also questioned whether the improvements were significant enough to justify the massive resources invested in training the model.

xAI is actively expanding its data center capacity and investing billions of dollars to develop more advanced AI models. The company’s supercomputer cluster, known as “Colossus,” is based in Memphis, Tennessee, and is claimed to be the largest in the world.

One of the key features of Grok-3 is a new smart search tool called DeepSearch. According to xAI, DeepSearch is a reasoning-based chatbot that can explain its thought process while answering user queries. The tool, which was demonstrated during the livestream, offers functions for research, brainstorming, and data analysis.

Meanwhile, Musk has been making bold moves in the AI space. Recently, a group of investors led by him offered $97.4 billion to acquire OpenAI’s nonprofit assets. However, OpenAI rejected the offer, signaling its reluctance to part with its existing structure.

As competition in artificial intelligence intensifies, xAI’s latest move with Grok-3 marks an important step in its efforts to establish itself as a major player in the AI industry.
