The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has renewed its call for Leah Sharibu’s release, condemning her seven-year captivity, urging government action, and calling for global support.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has renewed its call for the urgent release of Leah Sharibu, who has been held captive by Boko Haram insurgents since February 19, 2018. Marking over seven years since her abduction, CAN expressed solidarity with her family and all those affected by her prolonged captivity.

In a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN praised Leah’s unwavering faith and courage, describing her as “a beacon of hope and inspiration to us all.” The association condemned her continued captivity, calling it “a painful reminder of the insecurity plaguing our nation and the urgent need to protect the fundamental right to freedom of religion.”

CAN urged the Federal Government to “redouble its efforts to secure Leah’s release and that of others still held captive.” It emphasized that “no sacrifice is too great to bring our daughter home” and called on the international community “to lend their voices and resources to this cause.”

Calling on all Nigerians, especially Christians, CAN encouraged unity in prayer and advocacy for Leah’s safe return and peace in the country. “We urge all Nigerians, especially the Christian faithful, to unite in prayer and action for Leah and for peace in our land. Let us transcend denominational lines and work as one body to advocate for justice,” the statement read. CAN also reassured Leah’s family of its “unrelenting support.”

Addressing the government and security agencies, CAN demanded decisive action to combat insecurity. “To the government, security agencies, and all stakeholders, we charge you to act decisively to end this scourge of violence and restore safety to our nation,” it stated. The association reaffirmed its commitment to “speaking for the voiceless and championing the cause of peace and unity in Nigeria.”

“May God Almighty grant us the strength and wisdom to see this through,” CAN concluded, urging collective efforts to ensure Leah’s return and justice for all victims of insecurity.
