Ondo State’s Finance Commissioner Spraying

A controversy has erupted over the enforcement of Nigeria’s currency laws after Ondo State’s Finance Commissioner, Omowunmi Isaac was seen handing out cash at a public event.

The debate over Nigeria’s money-spraying law has once again taken center stage after Mrs Omowunmi Isaac was caught on video dishing out naira notes at a public event. While some believe the law is only enforced against ordinary citizens, others argue that certain cultural practices should not be criminalized.

The conversation has sparked a wave of mixed reactions, ranging from calls for legal action to outright dismissal of the controversy.

A viral video now circulating online shows Ondo State Commissioner for Finance, Omowunmi Isaac, allegedly spraying money at an event. The footage captures her handing out N500 notes to musicians after being given N1000 notes by an unidentified man. This has led to widespread criticism, with many drawing comparisons to the recent jailing of social media personality Bobrisky for a similar offense.

For some, the outrage is less about the act itself and more about the double standards in Nigeria’s justice system. @afrotrax voiced frustration, saying, “The rules are different for the ordinary masses and the political elites.” @dammygtnet agreed, adding, “Nothing will happen to her. The Okoyas did the same, and they’re walking free. Some people are just above the law.” Others, like @Engrmaxz, accused law enforcement of selective justice: “As usual, EFCC will turn the other way since it’s not a yahoo boy.”

However, not everyone sees this as a violation. @Iseoluwa64 argued that this was simply a Yoruba cultural practice, stating, “Go and check the definition of ‘spraying’ to determine whether she really broke the law.” Similarly, @Michael39289158 dismissed the claims outright, saying, “This is not spraying of money.” Even @special_Ada_Ide, a critic of the APC, admitted, “Let’s be honest—this wasn’t money spraying. But even if it was, nothing will happen to them. Look at Okoya’s son, any update?”

Amid the debate, some users found humor in the situation around Omowunmi Isaac. @Obi_of_ika_land joked, “Dem go say e dey inside envelope.” @EziokwuIyke questioned the importance of the issue, asking, “Is this really our problem?” Meanwhile, @FadeyiHenry used the opportunity to highlight government spending in Ondo State, pointing out that “91 billion was spent in Q4 with no details on where the money went.”

With the EFCC now vowing to investigate, the big question remains—will this lead to real consequences, or will it simply fade away like so many scandals before it?
