Another Nigerian University Shutdown Over Student Protest
By Gideon Ayeni

The Federal University Dutsinma (FUDMA) in Katsina State has announced a one-week mid-semester break following a student protest over the alleged killing of a colleague by a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF).
The unrest began on Sunday when students took to the streets, demanding justice after reports emerged that the JTF operative had accused their schoolmate of being an informant before fatally shooting him. The protest escalated and continued into Monday morning, prompting the university’s Senate to take swift action.
In response, FUDMA’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Armaya’u Bichi, declared a temporary closure of the institution, instructing all students to vacate the campus by 6:00 p.m. on February 24.
“The management wishes the students a happy and peaceful mid-semester break,” Prof. Bichi stated in an official announcement on Monday.
The incident has sparked widespread reactions, with students demanding accountability for the alleged extrajudicial killing. The university’s decision to shut down temporarily is seen as a measure to restore calm and prevent further escalation of tensions.
GWG.ng reports that the shutting down of the University comes days after the management of Federal University Lokoja (FUL), Kogi State shut down the institution indefinitely following growing tensions over the tragic accident that claimed the lives of five students.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the university’s Registrar and Secretary to Council, Dr. Rebecca Aimiohu Okojie, cited security concerns as the reason for the closure, emphasizing the need to prevent further loss of lives and property.
