Nigeria Left Out Of U.S. 2025 Visa Waiver Programme
By Benjamin Abioye

The United States has released an updated list of countries eligible for its 2025 Visa Waiver Programme (VWP). Unfortunately, Nigeria, South Africa, and Ghana are not included, along with some other African nations. The new policy brings changes to visa-free travel eligibility, impacting many travelers.
The U.S. Department of State recently announced these updates, which aim to simplify visa-free travel for business, tourism, and transit. While the changes benefit millions worldwide, some countries are disappointed by their exclusion from the program.
The updated VWP now includes 40 countries whose citizens can visit the U.S. without a visa. This year, Romania has been added to the list. However, Taiwan and the United Kingdom remain eligible only under specific conditions. Some of the countries on the list include Andorra, Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Spain, and Switzerland.
The VWP allows citizens from selected countries to travel to the U.S. without a visa for up to 90 days for tourism or business. Instead of applying for a visa, travelers can obtain an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before their trip.
Although most countries from previous years remain on the list, Romania’s inclusion is a major change. The U.S. has also strengthened security measures and prioritized countries with strong diplomatic and border security ties. However, Romania, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom are still excluded from the U.S. visa and interview waiver programme for 2025.
These changes highlight the evolving nature of U.S. immigration policies and their impact on global travel.
