FCCPC Summons MultiChoice Over Subscription Hike
By Benjamin Abioye

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has summoned MultiChoice Nigeria over its plan to increase cable TV subscription prices. The company intends to raise its subscription from March 1, 2025, and has been asked to clarify the reason for the hike.
MultiChoice has been scheduled to appear at the FCCPC headquarters for an investigative hearing on Thursday, February 27, 2025.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, expressed concern over frequent price hikes that Nigerian consumers face.
“The planned price increase raises concerns about recurrent unilateral price hikes, potential market dominance abuse, and perceived anti-competitive practices in the pay-TV industry,” the statement noted.
Ijagwu explained that the summon is in line with the FCCPC’s powers under sections 32 and 33 of its governing laws.
The commission warned that if MultiChoice fails to give a satisfactory explanation for its actions or is found guilty of violating fair market practices, the company could face regulatory penalties, sanctions, or other corrective measures to protect consumers.
Earlier reports indicated that MultiChoice plans to increase the price of its DStv Compact package by 21%, moving the cost from ₦15,700 to ₦19,000. This marks the second price adjustment in less than a year, following a similar increase in May 2024. At the time, the company attributed the hike to inflation and rising operational costs.
