The Nigerian government has assured the public that it will conduct a thorough and transparent investigation, including an autopsy, to determine the cause of death of Abubakar Lawal, a Nigerian professional footballer who passed away in Uganda.
Lawal, a former Nigerian Under-20 player, was a member of Vipers Football Club in Uganda. At the time of his death, he was also in his final year of studying Business Administration at Cavendish University.
In a statement expressing deep sorrow, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed its commitment to uncovering the circumstances surrounding Lawal’s death.
“We are committed to ensuring a thorough and transparent investigation, including an autopsy to verify the cause of death,” the ministry stated.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, also addressed the incident, describing Lawal’s passing as a significant loss to Nigeria.
“In this moment of grief, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and the entire Nigerian football community during this difficult time,” Tuggar said.
The ministry further explained that it is working closely with the Nigerian High Commission in Kampala, Uganda, which is collaborating with local authorities to establish what led to Lawal’s untimely death.
“The ministry has been in contact with the Nigerian High Commission in Kampala, Uganda, which is collaborating with local authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding his untimely death.
“We are committed to ensuring a thorough and transparent investigation, including an autopsy to verify the cause of death.
“The ministry has also directed the High Commission in Kampala to provide all necessary consular support to the family and ensure that justice is served,” Tuggar added.
He also highlighted Nigeria’s strong ties with Uganda and expressed confidence that the Ugandan authorities would treat the matter with the seriousness and sensitivity it deserves.
Tuggar urged Nigerians to remain calm while the investigation is ongoing and to avoid making assumptions that could interfere with the process.
“The ministry will continue to monitor the situation closely while we remain resolute in protecting the welfare and rights of all Nigerian citizens abroad.
“May the soul of Abubakar Lawal rest in perfect peace,” he concluded.
