The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has approved a significant increase in the daily feeding allowance for Nigerian Army personnel, doubling it from N1,500 to N3,000, effective from the end of March 2025.

Oluyede made this announcement while addressing troops at the 9th Brigade Parade Ground during his visit to the 81 Division in Lagos. Expressing dissatisfaction with the previous allowance, he reassured soldiers that their welfare remains a top priority under his leadership.

Beyond improving feeding conditions, the Army Chief also tackled housing challenges, particularly for warrant officers approaching retirement who do not own homes.

To address this, the Nigerian Army has introduced a housing scheme aimed at making homeownership more accessible for soldiers. The first phase of the initiative was launched in Abuja in December, with additional projects currently underway in Ibadan, Jos, Port Harcourt, Owerri, and Akwa Ibom.

Under this scheme, soldiers can purchase two- and three-bedroom houses at prices starting as low as N8 million, providing an affordable path to homeownership. Oluyede assured that more housing units would be made available across different states to meet growing demand.

In addition to housing support, the COAS also introduced a low-interest loan scheme designed to ease the financial burden on military personnel.

Unlike commercial banks that charge interest rates of up to 25%, the Army’s loan scheme comes with a highly subsidized 3% interest rate, allowing soldiers to access funds more affordably. Oluyede urged troops to take advantage of the initiative but advised them to borrow responsibly.

Recognizing concerns about uniform costs, Oluyede announced that the Army has begun distributing 100,000 new uniforms every month to ensure soldiers no longer have to purchase them with personal funds. He assured that more personnel would receive their kits before the year ends.

Reaffirming his dedication to improving conditions for soldiers, Oluyede urged the troops to remain committed to their duties, assuring them that his administration would continue to implement policies that enhance feeding, housing, financial aid, and proper equipment for the Nigerian Army.
