The security detail assigned to the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Mojisola Meranda, has been withdrawn, leaving both the Speaker and the Assembly vulnerable, sources confirmed on Thursday.

According to reports from several Nigeria news platforms, all police escorts guarding Speaker Mojisola Meranda and those securing the Lagos State House of Assembly have been withdrawn with immediate effect. The development has left the House and the Speaker exposed to potential attacks.

A media aide to the Speaker confirmed the development but did not provide further details on the reason behind the decision over the withdrawal of the security details of Speaker Meranda.

The Lagos Assembly has been in turmoil since January 13, when former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa was removed from office. His ouster has triggered an ongoing crisis within the legislative body, raising concerns over stability and security at the Assembly complex.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement regarding the withdrawal of security personnel.

GWG.ng reports that following the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as speaker of the House of Assembly last January that the decision had upset some political leaders of the state as it left the Lagos West Senatorial Zone without representation in the top hierarchy of the government.

A peace agreement to resolve the crisis had stipulated that Marenda who is from Lagos Central Senatoirial District just as the governor should resign to enable someone from the Lagos West Senatoiral district replace her.
