Lagos Speaker: 35 Lawmakers In Court To Counter Obasa
By Benjamin Abioye

Thirty-five lawmakers from Lagos have arrived at the Ikeja High Court for the hearing of a case filed by Mudashiru Obasa regarding the leadership dispute in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Obasa was removed as Speaker while he was on an official trip to the United States. He is now challenging the legality of his impeachment, arguing that the process did not follow the law.
On February 14, 2025, Obasa took legal action by filing a lawsuit at the Lagos State High Court. He is asking the court to reinstate him as Speaker immediately. According to court documents, he claims he was unfairly removed from office on January 13, 2025. The lawsuit names the current Speaker, Lasbat Mojisola Meranda, and the Lagos State House of Assembly as defendants.
In his case, Obasa questioned the legitimacy of the plenary session where he was impeached. He insists that the session was held unlawfully during the Assembly’s recess, without proper authorization.
“The action challenged the sitting and proceedings of the Lagos State House of Assembly to sit during recess without reconvening the House or giving any other person powers to reconvene the House,” the court filings state.
He further argues that the impeachment process violated multiple sections of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), including Sections 36, 90(2)(c), 101, and 311. He also claims that the Assembly did not follow its own Rules and Standing Orders, particularly Order V Rule 18(2) and Order II Rule 9(i-viii).
After Obasa’s removal, the lawmakers elected Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker. However, Obasa continues to challenge her authority, refusing to accept the change in leadership.
In a surprising move, Obasa returned to the Assembly chambers on Thursday, insisting that he had resumed his position as Speaker despite his impeachment.
The case is currently being handled by Hon. Justice Y.R. Pinheiro.
