Court Summons Former First Lady Over Libel
By Benjamin Abioye

A High Court in Akure, Ondo State, has issued a summons to Betty Akeredolu, the former First Lady of Ondo State, and Olumide Akinrinlola, the publisher of ‘Starnews Online’, over allegations of libel.
The legal action follows a petition filed by Omowunmi Isaac, the Ondo State Commissioner of Finance.
Isaac is demanding damages of ‘one billion naira’, claiming that a publication in ‘Starnews Online’ on February 13, 2025, defamed her. The article, titled “I Wouldn’t Be a Widow If Aketi Had Listened to Me – Betty Akeredolu Talks Tough,” allegedly contained false statements that harmed her reputation.
As part of the lawsuit, Isaac has also requested that the court order the defendants to ‘publicly retract’ the publication and issue an ‘unreserved apology’ in two national newspapers.
The court summons, signed by Registrar Adebanjo T.A., instructs the defendants to respond within 30 days of receiving the writ. It warns that failure to do so could result in the case proceeding without them.
“You are hereby commanded that within 30 days after service of this writ on you, inclusive of the day of such service, you do cause an appearance to be entered for you in the Akure Judicial Division of the High Court of Ondo State in an action of the suit of the claimant, and take notice that in default of your doing so, the claimant may proceed therein and judgment may be given in your absence,” the summons states.
The case is expected to draw significant public attention as it unfolds in the coming weeks.
