Rivers Sets Date For Fresh LG Election
By Gideon Ayeni

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced that fresh local government elections will take place on Saturday, August 9, 2025.
This decision on the fresh local government election in Rivers State follows last Friday’s Supreme Court judgment, which nullified the previous polls held on October 5, 2024.
RSIEC Chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (retd.), made the announcement on Wednesday during a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. He stated that the new local government election date was set in accordance with the powers granted to the commission under Section 5 of the RSIEC Law No. 2 of 2018.
“In line with the Supreme Court’s ruling, RSIEC has outlined guidelines and procedures for political parties and electioneering campaigns. The local government council elections will be conducted in all 23 local government areas on August 9, 2025,” Enebeli declared.
GWG.ng reports that the announcement of the new local government election day comes amid rising political tensions in Rivers State, as the Supreme Court’s verdict effectively ended the tenure of previously elected local government officials.
The fresh local government election is expected to set the stage for a renewed contest among political stakeholders in Rivers state.
