BREAKING: Nnamdi Kanu’s Case Officially Transferred To New Judge

The legal case of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has taken a new turn as a new judge has been assigned to handle his trial.

Nnamdi Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed the appointment of the new judge in a statement on Saturday.

Ejimakor stated that Kanu remains confident in his innocence and fully prepared to defend himself in court. He revealed that before visiting Kanu for their routine legal meeting, his team received two official letters regarding the case, which he described as significant.

According to him, one letter came from the Chief Justice of Nigeria in response to their request for administrative intervention after the previous judge stepped down from the case. The second letter, issued by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, officially reassigned the case to a new judge.

Kanu expressed gratitude for this decision and instructed his legal team to acknowledge the swift action taken by the Chief Justice of Nigeria. “Consequent upon these latest developments, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu instructed the legal team to publicly convey his sincere gratitudes to the Chief Justice of Nigeria for her sound administrative discretions and the despatch with which she responded to our request,” Ejimakor stated.

Kanu also appreciated the public for their support in demanding a fair reassignment of his case. Ejimakor emphasized that Kanu has always been ready for trial but faced obstacles due to the judicial delays that began in September 2024.

“To be sure, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has always been ready to take his trial because he is firmly convinced of his innocence. But the perverse events of the past six months (from September 2024, when the recusal happened) posed portent dangers to his constitutional rights, particularly his right to fair and speedy hearing,” Ejimakor said.

He further explained that the legal team had to take extraordinary steps to ensure that the case was reassigned fairly. Now that the judiciary has acted accordingly, Nnamdi Kanu and his legal team will focus on preparing his defense before the new judge.

“So, now that the first steps have been taken by the authorities to do the lawful thing, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his legal team shall take stock and hanker down to the zealous preparation of his defense,” he added.
