President Bola Tinubu has approved the takeover of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Ogun State, as a federal university, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s educational sector.

With its transition to a federal institution, TASUED becomes the first federally owned tertiary institution in Ogun East senatorial district.

Established in 2005 by the Ogun State Government, TASUED holds the distinction of being Nigeria’s first specialized university of education.

Announcing the decision on Friday, Tinubu commended the Ogun State Government for facilitating the handover, describing it as a tribute to Nigeria’s educational pioneers. He noted that the federal takeover of TASUED honors Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who championed free education in Western Nigeria, and Dr. Tai Solarin, the revered educator and activist for whom the institution is named.

The president also acknowledged the role of the Awujale of Ijebuland in ensuring the university’s survival when it faced the threat of closure in 2012, just seven years after its establishment.

With this development, TASUED joins the ranks of Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education in Owerri and Adeyemi Federal University of Education in Ondo, reinforcing the federal government’s commitment to strengthening teacher education in the country.
