Defection: Bwala Under Fire After Faulting El-Rufai’s ‘Inordinate Ambition’
By Benjamin Abioye

Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Policy Communication, has sparked controversy after questioning El-Rufai’s defection from APC to SDP, drawing mixed reactions.
Daniel Bwala, a former spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign and now a strong supporter of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, has reacted to the resignation of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
His remarks have triggered widespread reactions and debate.
Taking to social media, Bwala acknowledged El-Rufai’s right to switch parties but questioned his true intentions. He wrote:
“Senior @elrufai, I read the news today that you resigned from APC to join SDP. Well, I have nothing against you because you exercised your constitutional right. However, the MOTIVE is what we would interrogate in the coming days and remind Nigerians that you are not a phenomenon that emerged like a clap of thunder out of a blue sky. We would intellectually remind you that associating with sore losers to unseat the incumbent is not an IDEOLOGY, neither is it PROGRESSIVISM; It is simply an inordinate AMBITION, that is destined to fail.”
Bwala’s comments quickly ignited a wave of responses, with many questioning his stance and past political affiliations.
One user, @09Nasiir, dismissed Bwala’s concerns, stating, “Mallam El-Rufai is everything you aspire to be. Interrogating his motive is a rather daunting task that would be too heavy for you to execute.”
Similarly, @Haydar_Abdoul pointed out the contradiction in Bwala’s argument, saying, “If APC had thought the same in 2015, they wouldn’t have even tried.”
Another user, @Young__attorney, reminded Bwala of his own political history, commenting, “But sir, you were once the spokesperson of one of those sore losers ooo!”
@Ike_okoye_Dan also took a swipe at Bwala, writing, “See who is criticizing Mallam? Bwala? That jumped so soon from PDP to APC. Say nothing, sir.”
Meanwhile, @OyesanyaYomi accused Bwala of hypocrisy, stating, “When El-Rufai, Tinubu & Co. associated with a serial loser like Buhari to unseat an incumbent in Jonathan, I guess it was an ideology then.”
As reactions continue to pour in, the debate over El-Rufai’s defection and Bwala’s comments underscores the ever-shifting landscape of Nigerian politics, where alliances and ideological positions often change with time.
