Rivers State is once again in the spotlight as a fresh political standoff unfolds between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the State House of Assembly over the presentation of the 2025 budget.

The long-anticipated 2025 budget presentation was abruptly halted on Wednesday after the Rivers State House of Assembly complex was locked, preventing the governor from gaining access.

This development, it is beleived, has darkened the prospects for peace between the legislators and the governor.

The development came after the governor wrote a letter dated March 11, 2025 to the speaker, Martin Amaewhule informing him of his intention to present the 2025 budget before the house.

The letter read thus:

However, as the letter to the speaker surfaced on Wednesday, many were wondering at the haste of the governor in going forward with the presentation without waiting for a response from the lawmaker.
“The governor wrote a letter to the House and did not wait even for an acknowledgment or a reply from the House and within hours of writing came to present the House. It looks so suspicious” a source privy to the development told GWG.ng.

As tensions mount, political observers believe this crisis could either force a resolution between Fubara and his opponents or further entrench the divide, leaving Rivers State in limbo. With the governor’s next move uncertain, all eyes remain on the unfolding drama in Port Harcourt. Will this deadlock be broken, or is Rivers State set for a prolonged battle of political wills?
