Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has revealed that former President Muhammadu Buhari gave his approval before he left the All Progressives Congress (APC).

El-Rufai explained that he met with Buhari on Friday, March 7, to inform him about his plan to leave the party. Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, he said Buhari offered his prayers and best wishes for his next political move.

“I met with him (Buhari) on Friday and told him about my consultations in preparation to leave the party. I sought his blessing and prayers and told him about the new party I am joining. And he gave his blessing, prayers, and wished me success,” El-Rufai said.

He added that Buhari emphasized his role as a statesman while leaving politics to active politicians. “He (Buhari) told me that he is now a statesman, and we are the politicians. He said he knew we had good intentions and then prayed for us,” he stated.

Speaking further, El-Rufai expressed his dissatisfaction with APC and mocked the party’s leadership. “What next? I quit their party and challenged them to eat the party if it is food,” he said.

When asked if he left to avoid being expelled, El-Rufai stated that he would have preferred being removed, as it would have saved him from justifying his decision. “Well, it would have been better for me if they expelled me. I have stated many times that APC would be my last political party. Had they expelled me, they would have saved me the troubles of explaining why I left the APC. As I said, I have not left the APC, but the APC rather left me,” he explained.
