The Promise Tinubu Made But Failed – El-Rufai
By Benjamin Abioye

Nasir El-Rufai has revealed that Bola Tinubu has failed to honor a promise made before the election, leaving him disappointed after offering his support.
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has expressed disappointment over his support for President Bola Tinubu during the election campaign.
El-Rufai revealed that Tinubu had promised him a ministerial position, specifically the Minister of Power, if he won the presidency. He claimed that the president assured him of his commitment to solving Nigeria’s long-standing electricity crisis and sought his help in achieving that goal.
In an interview with BBC Hausa, El-Rufai clarified that he never asked for a ministerial position, stating that it was Tinubu who made the offer. “That was what they always said. But the question is: Did I lobby to become a minister? I know those who paid money to become ministers,” he said.
He further explained that Tinubu publicly requested his support during a visit to Kaduna and later discussed the matter with him privately. “Perhaps if he (President Tinubu) privately made a promise to appoint me, he would have denied it. But he publicly begged me in Kaduna to come and work with him. Even at that, I did not accept his request until we sat privately to discuss the issue,” El-Rufai stated.
According to him, Tinubu emphasized that Nigeria’s power crisis had hindered development for years, and he wanted to be the president who would finally resolve it. “He (Tinubu) said power problem has become an issue to Nigeria’s development, and successive leaders have failed to solve the problem. He sought my support to achieving his dream of becoming the president who solves the power problem. It was in the light of this challenge, I accepted to consider working with him. I thought he was serious,” he said.
When asked if he felt betrayed by the president, El-Rufai responded, “No, he betrayed himself.” On whether he regretted supporting Tinubu, he replied, “Well, I can’t say I regretted, but I am disappointed.”
