Security operatives in Abalama, Rivers State, have reportedly fired tear gas to disperse Kalabari women protesting against the visit of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

The women, angered by Wike’s controversial remark about the Ijaw ethnic nationality, blocked all entry points into the community, vowing not to allow him access. Their demonstration follows a statement made by Wike on live television, where he referred to the Ijaw as a “minority of minorities.” The comment has since sparked outrage, with the Ijaw National Congress (INC) and other groups condemning it as disrespectful.

Determined to resist his presence, the Kalabari women, a subgroup of the Ijaw, mobilized to prevent Wike from attending a Thanksgiving ceremony in Abalama. Despite warnings from traditional rulers, including the King of Abalama, who reportedly urged Wike to cancel the visit to avoid embarrassment or potential violence, the minister proceeded with his plans. The king had also written to the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, raising concerns over possible unrest, but his plea was allegedly ignored.

Videos from the protest showed the women chanting and blocking the roads, ensuring that no pro-Wike supporters could gain access. The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Secretary, Maobuye Nangi Obu, accused security forces of using excessive force, alleging that Wike’s supporters were provoking violence in the community.

The protesting women remain resolute, insisting that Wike is not welcome in Abalama. They declared that no amount of money or political power could erase the insult directed at their people, emphasizing that their demonstration is a stand for dignity and respect.
