Kano Reacts To Appeal Court Ruling On Sanusi’s Reinstatement
By Gideon Ayeni

The Kano State Government has reaffirmed that Muhammadu Sanusi II remains the 16th Emir of Kano, dismissing claims that a ruling by the Court of Appeal in Abuja overturned his reinstatement.
Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Isa Dederi, clarified on Friday that the appellate court’s decision only preserves the current situation pending the Supreme Court’s final judgment. He emphasized that the Court of Appeal had previously upheld the state government’s authority to reinstate Sanusi in its January 10, 2025 ruling and does not have the power to reverse its own judgment.
Dederi’s statement came in response to an appeal filed by Alhaji Aminu Baba Dan Agundi, a kingmaker aligned with the deposed 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero. Dan Agundi had sought a stay of execution to suspend Sanusi’s reinstatement until the Supreme Court delivers its verdict.
The legal battle over the Kano Emirate reignited after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf repealed the 2019 Kano State Emirate Council Law in May 2024. The law, introduced under former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, had split the Kano Emirate into five smaller emirates, leading to Sanusi’s controversial removal in March 2020 over allegations of insubordination. Following his dethronement, Sanusi was exiled to Nasarawa State.
However, with the law repealed, the state government restored Sanusi as the sole Emir of Kano, a move challenged in court by loyalists of Bayero. On January 10, 2025, a three-member panel of the Court of Appeal, led by Justice Mohammad Mustapha, overturned a previous Federal High Court ruling that had questioned the legality of Sanusi’s reinstatement.
Despite this, Dan Agundi escalated the matter to the Supreme Court and requested a temporary suspension of Sanusi’s reign until a final verdict is reached. While the Court of Appeal agreed to maintain the status quo, the Kano State Government insists that Sanusi remains the legally recognized Emir, pending the Supreme Court’s ruling.
